> What is the operating system?

=> যে সফটওয়্যার দিযে পুরো কম্পিউটার সিস্টেম পরিচালিত হয়, তাকেই সিস্টেম সফটওয়্যার বা অপারেটিং সিস্টেম বলে। অপারেটিং সিস্টেম ছাড়া কম্পিউটার চলতে পারেনা। প্রাণ ছাড়া যেমন প্রাণীর দিহ অচল, কম্পিউটারের অপারেটিং সিস্টেম ছাড়া কম্পিউটারও তেমন অচল।

2. Hardware Coordination:

উদাহরণ: কম্পিউটারে পেনড্রাইভ লাগালে সেটির সাথে কম্পিউটারের মেমরি, প্রসেসর ও হার্ডডিস্কের সাথে সমন্বয় / যোগাযোগ করায়, ফলে আমরা সেটিকে ‘Found New Hardware’ হিসেবে দেখি।

3. Information and Data Management:

৪. Data কমিউনিকেশন ও নেটওয়ার্কিং ব্যবস্থাপনা:

=> অপারেটিং সিস্টেম কম্পিউটারের তথ্য ও উপাত্ত আদান- প্রদান অর্থাৎ কমিউনিকেশনের ব্যবস্থা করে থাকে। একে নেটওয়ার্কিং ও বলা হয়। এর ফলে যে কেউ অন্য কম্পিউটার থেকে তথ্য ও উপাত্ত নিজের কম্পিউটারে এনে ব্যবহার করতে পারে।

উদাহরণ: ইন্টারনেটের সাহায্যে কোন গান, ভিডিও, সিনেমা বা ফাইল Download বা Upload করা।

5. To monitor the application software:

৫. অ্যাপ্লিকেশন সফটওয়্যারের কাজ তদারকি করা:

=> অপারেটিং সিস্টেম কম্পিউটারের সকল অ্যাপ্লিকেশন সফটওয়্যার সমূহের কার্যাবলি তদারকি করা, তাদের পরিচালনা করা, Debugging করা / ত্রুটি সংশোধন করা ও তাদের সংরক্ষণ বা ফেলে দেয়ার কাজও করে থাকে।

উদাহরণ: কম্পিউটারে যেকোন Application (Apps) প্রোগ্রাম Install বা Uninstall করা, Run করা, Close করা বা Troubleshooting করা। এছাড়াও আনুষঙ্গিক নানা কাজকর্ম অপারেটিং সিস্টেম করে থাকে। এদের মধ্যে ডিবাগিং, ট্রাবলশুটিং, হার্ডওয়্যারের নিরাপত্তা বিধান এবং ভাইরাস দমন ইত্যাদি কাজও সম্পন্ন করে থাকে।

=> অপারেটিং সিস্টেমের গঠনঃ কম্পিউটারে অপারেটিং সিস্টেম যেসব প্রোগামের মাধ্যমে গঠিত হয়ে থাকে, সেগুলো হচ্ছেঃ

২. জব কন্ট্রোল প্রেগ্রাম:- অপারেটিং সিস্টেম এর আরেকটি অংশ হচ্ছে জব কন্ট্রোল প্রোগ্রাম। এ প্রোগ্রামটির মাধ্যমে কম্পিউটারের সব জব (যেমন: ইনটুট নেয়া, প্রসেসিং, আউটপুট) গুলো সম্পাদন করে থাকে।

৩. ডিবাগিং প্রেগ্রাম:- অপারেটিং সিস্টেম এর এটি একটি মূখ্য অংশ। এটি কম্পিউটারের অন্যান্য অ্যাপ্লিকেশন প্রোগ্রাম ও সফটওয়্যার সমূহের সব এরর ও সমস্যা ডিবাগিং করে থাকে।

যেমন: কোন সফটওয়্যার আনস্ট্যাবল (হ্যাং) হয়ে গেলে তা বন্ধ করে দিতে সাহায্য করে (উইন্ডোজ ৭ ও উইন্ডোজ ৮.১ এ)।
